BleepingComputer.com: updating video card?

will the following specs run nVIDA's 295 GTX series card?

EVGA 680I SLI MOBO (PCI EXPRESS)
CORE 2 DUO 2.13 GHZ E6400 (1066MHZ)
COSAIR 2GB DDR2
1 KW OEM ATX PSU

and if not what would i need to upgrade also for the card to run?

It will run it, but with a CPU that slow I don't know what kind of performance to expect.

Agreed, the video card will not operate very well due to the CPU being so slow. I would go for at least a dual or quad core CPU with a clock speed at or above 2.8GHz. for maximum performance.

Will my E-8400 core 2 duo @ 3.0 ghz be enough for a HD 5870?

Also,would a Q9550 be a good choice aswell? I can upgrade to the quad if neccesary.

I was thinking of changing the whole system to AMD Phenom xII 965,DDR3,etc. if my current setup is not enough.

But I see PCI-E 3.0 on the horizon.New motherboard?
So if I can hold on with my dual core or quad until then, I'll upgrade after.

You can hold off until around 2011 when PCI-E 3 comes out, but you will need a compatible graphics card and motherboard to see any benefit and the GPU's will be backwards compatible. The Phenom II 965 will run better than a Q9550 and will cost a little more than it. Though you would have to replace your motherboard and CPU, so switching to AMD will ultimately be more expensive than installing another Core 2. Usually, I suggest ignoring the 965 if you don't mind overclocking. The 955 is the exact same CPU as the 965 just clocked slightly slower and consumes less power. If you can get to the 965 levels, which is very easy to do, then you will have a good CPU that costs less but runs at its level. Your current CPU will probably face a bottleneck since a Phenom II 940 also has a bottleneck, though it can pull 90% of what that GPU can offer.
