BleepingComputer.com: Hello

Hi, everyone!
I am a new member. I have a chronic condition I want to work on here. I scan my computer daily with all sorts of free programs that are supposed to eliminate this or that. I haven't found any viruses, but have deleted a lot of "spyware." I have been doing this for years. The problem is, occasionally I get in to trouble doing this (!). Then I scurry all over the web looking for help, and there is a LOT of help out there. Other than the HP site and Microsoft sites, I am not sure which are trustworthy. Some programs I hear and read a lot about, so assume they are not harmful--like Ad Aware, HiJack This, AVG antivirus, etc.
I have an HP laptop dv9700. I run Vista, and use it to surf, email, occasionally use MS Word for papers, and shopping.

Oh, I use Comcast service, and use AVG and AdAware as my main protection. I do not use the programs that come with Comcast--I believe by CA.
