The Anti Phishing Workgroup, an international consortium of security companies and companies affected by phishing attacks, has released their report on rogue anti-malware programs for the first half of 2009. According to their report (PDF), the number of variants of such programs has skyrocketed from around 22,000 in January to over 150,000 in June.

According to the report, this number reflects not the number of unique malicious programs but variations of a smaller group of programs:

The primary reason for the creation of so many variants is to avoid signature‐based detection by legitimate antivirus programs.  The use of behavioral analysis is of limited use in this type of malware because the programs themselves do not act maliciously on computers, other than displaying false information

Holy Beep! That doesn't look good - but it explains why you see so many more posts asking for help with fake AVs on the forums.
