Hi might not have access to the computer anymore or something. Who cares though, he's gonna try to use the USB drive installation. By the way I haven't ever heard of Laxar, so my guess is he meant Lexar and just typed it wrong. I could be wrong though. I guess most Flash Drives now a days are bootable, but you can never be to sure. The cheap ones might not, then again I've heard of some spendy ones being unbootable. I have a 16 dollar 8GB from Microcenter that boots fine and dandy. So I guess you just gotta guess.

oh will it still work even though it goes straight to blue screen? i thought i had to install the CD drive with drivers and such before the PC would recognize it? i thought i needed windows up and running before i can install new devices. so i just plug it in and it will recognize it like it was always there? do i have to change anything in BIOS for it to recognize the cd drive?

As long it is hooked up properly and the jumper set accordingly it will work. Make sure it is seen in the BIOS, and set to first boot device. You should be all set.

It worked!!! I got the optiplex running! Thanks to all who helped! I have a different PC(emachines) without a CD drive that I will try the USB boot method on. i hope that one works as well. if not i will buy a cd drive and do the same thing i did to the optiplex.

No reason the USB method should not work for you. If your game to try it and learn, go for it.
But the CD drive from the Optiplex will work for the emachines too if the connection types are right.
