The Vista version on my laptop is Home Premium build 6001 with service pack 1.
My last scan of malwarebytes did not solve the problem either.

Paste this in and click OK.
NOTEPAD c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
Is Microsoft listed there? Are there lots of unusual looking entries?

CoolCat, I followed Microsoft's instructions (although they should be re-written and were misleading) and I reset my hosts. My hosts file is now verbatim to the windows vista text log displayed on that microsoft support tutorial. I still cannot download anything from microsoft. Now, instead of saying "cannot connect to microsoft.com" the webpage just doesn't load, or says "done." I get no response from the download server whatsoever. I think we've found the source of the problem, but microsoft's support tutorial did not fix it.
*note that I can download things from other sites, just nothing from microsoft.com

Somehow, this was caused by running one of those "Internet Boosters/Optimizers" such as Auslogics..etc. Upon downloading "TCP Optimizer" and changing my MTU back to the regular value, I was able to download/visit Microsoft pages again.
Again not sure if this would be your fix, but I saw the thread and remembered when this happened to me.
Hope you get it working. All the best.

But seriously you may just need to flush the dns cache, Start/All Programs/Accessories - Right click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
Paste this in and hit enter
ipconfig /flushdns
Also open Internet Properties/Security and check that all zones are set to Default level.

I flushed my dnc cache, and restarted my computer.
I also checked all zones to default level
I can get to that website, http://thesource.ofallevil.com/en/us/default.aspx, but when it comes time to download anything, I can't access the download page link. Anything from the server download.microsoft.com or update.microsoft.com won't work
I also cannot access these websites:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
The nature of these websites that I cannot access makes me believe I have been infected with something

I downloaded "SG TCP Optimizer". How would I change the MTU back to the regular value?

I have tried this on firefox and IE, and this problem occurs on every single one of the computers in my house.
may be a virus thats gotten to all the computers
if its not that then you need to contact Microsoft and tell them your area and country

I downloaded the program, but I cannot update the virus and spyware definitions. MSE won't let me run any scan until it has successfully updated. Is there a way to update it via a download of definitions?

Thank you for that, it installed correctly and i ran a 2+ hour full scan on my computer. it came up with one result; i put a screenshot showing what it was.
However, I still cannot access any microsoft download servers (or update the microsoft security essentials either). I also discovered that I cannot access the internet explorer 8 download with the g.msn.com server. Is it possible for a program to block your access to certain servers?
