Syst. won't recognize ZIP files. Doesn't unzip, asks me for a prog. to open them w.

Hello

I am using my old Dell Latitude CP(laptop)

Windows ME
32 MB Ram(Ya its old)
Pentium MMX 233 MhZ Processor

When I download a .zip file (such as an old DOS game for my son) or even when I tried to download Kerio 2.1.5(firewall) they come in a .zip file and when I click on them in my desktop. I am prompted this "Click the program you want to use to open '[title of file].zip' If the program is not in the list, click other."

The only programs in the list are:

Corel PerfectExpert
Corel PerfectScript
Corel WordPerfect
Image Preview
Imaging
Internet Explorer
Windows Media Player
Notepad
Paint
PFREG
Windows Movie Maker
Word Pad

Which one will help me unzip .zip files?

I would appreciate any advice on this issue!

Hi,
You need the utility to open zip files such as http://www.filehippo.com/download_winzip/ or winRAR etc that open zip files.

Hi Firerock, thanks for the input.

One problem. According to file hippo, none of their versions of WinZip are Windows ME compatible. It will not install on my ME system.

Are there any utilities that open zip files and are Win ME compatible?

7 zip should work
and win rar will work

or you can use the one built in windows ME
to get that go to MYCOMPUTER>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS>WINDOWS SETUP>go down intill you see SYSTEM TOOLS> Click Compressed folders box. this only reads zip.

but you should get winrar(reads much more formats)

Of course they are WinZip 9.0 SR-1 is even though it doesn't say so in the Technical tab. Thats a fault with FileHippo.

If you want the older WinZips then you can find them here. I've always used WinZip 7.0 on Win98SE, WinME and my WinXP because it works how I like it to work. Not adding stupid folders inside the zip.

As other users have said 7-Zip 9.07 Beta or WinRAR 3.90 will also open zip files. :thumbsup:

One more thing about 7-Zip. It does not automatically associate with ZIP files (or any other archive files). You need to open 7-Zip from Start Menu shortcut. Then go to Tools > Options. In the Options dialog, click on System tab. Then click on Select All followed by OK.
