every time i start playing a graphics heavy game (batman arkham asylum/prototype/...), after a few minutes of gameplay, the game either crashes or (more commonly) the screen stops getting input (like standby mode) and shows nothing, plus the computer is completely frozen (even the num lock key doesn't work) and my only option is to restart the pc.
any suggesstions?

i just finished reformatting because i thought it would solve the problem but it didn't.
