BleepingComputer.com: Is Ubuntu good?

I've been kind of getting tired of Windows lately, and I wanted to see if having a Ubuntu OS would be like. I've never used Linux, but would someone mind telling me some of the pros and cons of linux and ubuntu over other Linux based OS's?

Also, how are the capabilities of Ubuntu for Hardware? Applications?
Will most common (i.e Firefox, OpenOffice, iTunes, etc) work on Ubuntu?

Well openoffice will work and firefox , not so sure about itunes.

Con::Its quite hard to make starcraft work on it(wine).
Pro:I can put all desktop effects on( nicer then vista i think) and this is a old pentium 3 with a old PCI nvidia geforce 4
and 386mb of sd ram , am sure that your computer is more powerful then my.

its that i have to keep booting in windoes becasue i cant get my games to work

Well, yeah.. My computer has 3GB RAM, 750 HDD, Chipset nVidia 6150 SE, and AMD Athlon X2 4450e..

Im just really concerned about it's compatibility to other programs I use regularly on Vista.

iTunes I beleive is a "no-go". However there are many other good programs that will sync your iPod (ubuntu will let you manually mount your iPod as removable media, handy to know) or just to be used as a media player. Here are the big negatives:

1) Your have to install codecs for proprietary media types (MP3, WMA, etc) Not too bad but can be a hassle.
2) Java is hit or miss.
3) Reduced laptop battery time

Give it a shot as a live CD and see if you like it (remember the Live CD is much slower than an actual install)

I don't really have a problem with 3-- I have a desktop.

I'll partition my hard drive and give it a shot.. Hopefully it will be okay =]
