If you click middle button, you can see a circle with four arrows. To scroll in a direction move the cursor in the respective direction's arrow.

However, if I click the middle button, it just shows two arrows (up, and down) and I miss the arrows to the left, to the right. You would see the left and right arrows only when there is a possibility of scrolling horizontally. Similarly, up and down arrows are shown when there is possibility to scroll vertically. If there is nothing to scroll then nothing is shown.

or if you get a mouse with a side scroll on the wheel (Logitech G7)

On some laptops you can scroll using the sides of the touchpad. Bottom does horizontal and the right edge does vertical.
