My pc is freezing like it is in standby. I am getting vertical lines in a color pattern. I have tried to use the escape button and the ctrl/alt/del but nothing works. There is no way to get out of it. Each time I have to manually restart the computer and that starts the repair function. This happens quite often but not each time the computer is left on. I can see no certain pattern to when it does it. Any and all help will be highly appreciated

Sounds like it might be hardware with the locking up and lines issues.

Try to see if it will work in safe mode (Hit F8 Repeatedly on start-up, choose "Safe Mode")

If you get the same issues in safe mode, its looking more toward hardware.

Try running some diagnostic tools like [post="http://www.memtest86.com/"]Memtest[/post] to check the memory.

Also, if your seeing lines, it might be a video card issue, but a video card will not LOCK up your computer necessarily.

Try these steps and report back!

that seems to have done the trick. I used the update driver page from Dell and the issue seems to have gone away. Thank you for all of your help.
