external usb sound cards are these things good

I first saw one of these models on www.bestbuy.com. It was a 24 bit sound blaster live card connected to the pc via usb. I think this could be a good idea to go with because I have a fairly powerful video card (nvidia gforce 6800 ultra) and i don't want anything to get in its way. I have heard of people experiencing problems when their video and sound cards are close to each other (and i only have one available pci slot). But, do you think that any latency in sound would be experienced do to the usb connection.

What do you guys think is a better solution?

by the way, the price is the same for the pci model and usb model of the same device, so that is not an issue
