You can try:

Upper & Lowe Filters - http://delltrain.wordpress.com/2008/07/15/...d-lower-filter/

Upper & Lower Filters - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529

Upper and Lower Filters. CD-ROM 314060 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Kind of an attempted cure-all for drives gone wrong .

Even though this is routine, it's a registry edit. As such, you need to take normal precautions anytime you are intend to edit registry entries. Most importantly, back up your current registry before beginning/making any changes. A good tool for backing up: ERUNT Registry Backup Tool - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html

What sort of eeprom utility? Sorry, have never used such.

You mean that you flashed your BIOS?

Or you installed a firmware update for the optical drive?
