Hi Clive K, welcome to BleepingComputer

Its a possibility that your sound drivers are damaged or not properly installed. You should install sound drivers from Gateway website and install them. The sound drivers come in a executable setup format, so all you have to do is double click on the downloaded file and follow the instructions.

This has happened to me, my father, my friend, and a few other people I know as well.

As far as I can tell it had to do with a recent Windows update that disabled/deleted my audio driver. The problem for me was fixed by rebooting my computer, but for other people they had to reinstall their audio drivers.
