i've heard people on the boards with firefox/google redirect problems, unable to run spybot, adaware, hijack this, malwarebytes etc. because of unknown causes. even in safe mode . this was all me several days ago. couldn't uninstall those programs, permissions changed. windows installer service could not be accessed errors. couldn't rename the files to run them either. programs would run then disappear, no process at all. disable registry tools entry changed. i was really screwed. then i saw a post that mentioned combofix in conjunction with atf cleaner and dr. cureit, sdfix. eventually i got everything out, now all programs run properly. i believe the combofix found some nasty stuff. rootkits etc. i have a list of what i had to do if anyone is curious, but just posting that it is possible.

I'm glad combofix worked for you AND that you had no issues after using it.
HOWEVER, for others who see this and think that combofix will work for you:
Please note the message text in blue
at the top of the Am I infected?
What do I do? forum.
ComboFix is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when
instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained in the use of the program.
ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance
and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use.
Please read Combofix's Disclaimer
Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing
it from ever starting again.
