CD Drive Doesn't Work Not sure what to do

This site has been super helpful before so I anticipate good things.
My Cd drive when I tried it today did not work. I put in the Cd like I always do. The green light flashes a few times and then that is it. It doesn't do anything after that. Normally, the green light would flash some more and you would hear it loading up whatever disc that is put in there.
I tried different disks just to make sure and I know the discs work. They even work another computer, just not the one I am trying to do it on. What could possibly be the problem? It was working fine a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks in advanced!

Just a cautionary note: Even though this is a routine registry edit which many have done safely...always back up your registry before thinking about doing such. A good tool for such: ERUNT Registry Backup Tool - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html.

hamluis: Those seem like they fix it if you can't burn a disk or something. Mine can't even recognize there is a disk in there so would those help?
Thanks!

As long as I know that the attempted fix cannot impair my system any more than it currently is...I move forward.

I backed up my registry edit using the program you recommended and did the first link (it seemed most appropriate) and deleted the upper filter keys (lower filter keys did not exist and could not find them).
I restarted my computer and put in a cd that I know works and still nothing.
Any other suggestions?

I would also check Event Viewer for any error messages concerning any of the drives attached. IME, when a drive is having problems, there are error messages in Event Viewer.

I don't have any different optical drives (nor would I know how to put them in)
Event Viewer didn't show me anything of significance. I found a lot of ftsata2 errors, synchronizing the clock errors, and dhp erros; but none of them relate to my problem.
So I guess I have no choice but to get a new drive thing. Are they expensive and would I be able to put it in myself? Is it easy to install?

You just need to ensure that you get the right type (either SATA or PATA) of connections for the motherboard of your system). If you don't have SATA connections on your board...don't get a SATA optical drive.

How do I know if it is compatible with my desktop? I have a compaq presario SR1601NX system with its CD-Writer thing.
I also found this on the compaq website:
CD-RW 48x32x48 drive
Port type Quantity
CD write 48X
CD rewrite 32X
CD read 48X

You need a PATA/IDE-connection drive, e.g., http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....18&name=IDE.
The only possible way to get an optical drive which won't work in your system...is to get a SATA-connection drive.

Also, when I load up itunes it says that there are problems with burning disks and I think it is because of that stuff I deleted in the reg edit. How can I use that program to restore it? I have 3 things on my desktop:
1. Erunt_setup - probably won't help me
2. NTREGOPT
3. ERUNT
What do I do and how do I do it? Thanks!

Problems usually arise because some key file or files in the program has/have become damaged/corrupted. The uninstall/reinstall replaces all files for that program.
