Yahoo recently upgraded their client, and since then, my old version (7.5.something) has been acting all buggy and more unstable than usual.

I went out looking for the latest edition of Yahoo messenger with 98 support, and found it to be 8.1.0.214... But when I download and install it, it crashes when it opens.

The latest version I can get working is 7.5.0.657 on this box...

Does anyone know the actual best version to continue using on 98?

Try Miranda IM which supports many chatting services including Yahoo! IM : http://www.miranda-im.org/

Try Pidgin IM which is like Miranda : http://www.pidgin.im/download/windows/ (you need to install older GTK for it http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing...inonWindows98ME )

Well according to FileHippo none of their downloads are compatable with Win98. According to OldApps it says Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista for all versions but they aren't very good with their technical info. OldVersion don't show any spec. But here they show 9.0.0.907 works on Win98 which I don't believe.

I used to use it years ago but I thing it was 5.5 or 6.0

What about MSN Messenger (Windows Live Messenger) do you use that?

I use MSN Messenger 7.0.0820 which is the last version for Win9x/ME on my old Win98SE and WinME systems and my new WinXP system.. The default installation for WinXP is v4.6, I also have other problems with it.

Pidgin is a very good IM client, as Romeo29 said. I use it to cut down on IM clutter, it neatly tabs all my conversations in one window, supports GTalk, AIM, MySpaceIM, Facebook chat(special plug-in required), and alot more.
