Computer not recognizing sound card

I formatted my old PC with Windows XP SP3 and when I connect my speakers, there are no sounds. I don't think it recognizes the sound card because when go to control panel and click on sound device management, it says "No Audio Device," and everything is greyed out, as in I can't adjust the volume or anything. So I am guessing that it does not recognize that the computer has a sound card. Any fix for this?

I would first check in BIOS that the sound is switched on. Is it the onboard sound or have you added a specific advanced sound card?.

Onboard sir. I went on BIOS but don't see an option for sound anywhere. Where exactly on the BIOS screen do I go?

is there any entry that has a yellow circle with a black ! in it ? and beside it says unknown pci audio(may be different)

Your system's sound drivers are not installed. do you know what sound do you have onboard your mobo.
Do this.
Install your sound drivers.
Windows Xp sp3 has known sound card issues, if you are unable to install the drivers for you SP3 and those drivers worked fine on SP2 then i'll guide you further for this....
so more detials about your sound card and your drivers set.

Actually I'm not sure if the soundcard is actually on the motherboard, but I'd say likely. How do I know? How do I know what type of motherboard or sound card I have?

I believe it is the Dell Dimension 5150. I brought it to the local PC shop last year to change the power supply + Ram + case. I'm 95% sure it's the 5150 though.
