wireless card can't find wirless card on laptop

I purchased a laptop last year off of Craig"s list(my first mistake) the first windows update it did it gave me an "invaild windows" screen. So I purchased "windows 2000 pro" and put on it. Gave the laptop to my granddaughter and while she was here over the weekend we tired to sign on with the wireless card in the laptop.I have a router on my desktop to connect to.It would not connect and the only way to get it to sign on was dial-up or her wireless data card that she had. It is a dell Latitude C510/C610 so I went online to try and update drive because I am thinking it was from where I had the windows 2000 installed on it, it just never reconzied the card but can't find out what kind of card it is to find the driver. Can you give me any pointers as to where to go and find out the info needed?
