Found 2 different boards using that chip set. A Gigabyte and a Biostar.
These should get you your sound back. File/Description > Audio CI9761_512_WIN9XMENT42KXP.EXE.

Oh dear - I downloaded it and it did say it may just make my system unstable as it did not have an XP logo or whatever it said, and I nearly didn't do it, then thought if it is the right one it was OK with it before. Anyway it took me a few times afterwards trying to start the computer. It said the memory was too low. Eventually it did load but unfortunately no sound. I am hoping it isn't unstable. A friend was going to install some extra memory for me so I will ask if he knows how to install a soundcard. It is probably time I changed but I can't seem to face the hassle of putting things back on again, and there are my settings for the Internet and various programmes I use that I may not get now. I will probably risk some extra memory and hope the system is not unstable.
Thanks for trying to help.

Adding additional memory as long as it is the right type and preferably matched will not cause you to have to reinstall everything.
I think you are thinking of your hard drive. That is where all your programs are installed\stored.

Yes, I realise that. I was meaning that perhaps it was time I bought myself a new computer and started from scratch again. I am comfortable with XP and with the programmes I am using so will probably try a memory upgrade as it has gone even slower - it went very slow after I bought a new digital camera and loaded all the software. My memory is 512 at the moment and I understand I will be able to increase it to 2 GB which hopefully will make a difference.
I will see if a sound card can be fitted as I haven't had any success in sorting it out.

i'm not sure if this would help but i had problems like this before where it won't play any music and gets error message when i play something from media player. and it's usually fixed by just restarting windows audio under services, and basically after that, i'm good to go. =)

It sounds like you may also have some issues with items being loaded at start-up. Many programs do this when installed without user consent\knowledge.
While this is most likely the reason for your sound issues. Would seem XP dose have problems maintaining the sound for some reason. This forum has several posts with similar issues.
Additional memory will help. An add-in sound card may or may not fix the problem. Is the service Windows audio set to start up type "Auto".
Regarding the slowness, probably caused by to many items loading when Windows starts, I have had very good luck with this little program. StartUpLite.

Been away for three days in the caravan. Will download StartUpLite as it is certainly very slow now to start up. I did check the Windows Startup that someone mentioned to me and it was set to Auto.
