BleepingComputer.com: Taking an OS off a HHD.

Hello everyone, first time posting a topic here.

I'm going to try and explain this the best i can, ive had some other people not quite understand my cenerio on other sites.
Ill do it in point form to make it kinda easy.

-I have TWO 30GB HDD. There the exact same make

-Both of them have windows XP on them.

- One of the two HDD has all my programs and stuff on it.

-While the other one only has an Operating system and the default programs.

-I want to take the HDD that only has an OS on it and format it into a storage device.

-I dont have the original Windows XP install disk because a friend gives me pretty much all his old computer stuff.

-I posted some pictures on page two of the thread to show how i set some stuff up. I guess i didn't circle some that great so you might have to look abit hard lol.

one thing i didnt mention on CHF. Evertime i booted up me PC with both HDD connected, they would randomly boot up and down when it was checking devices.

Sorry if the post is confusing. I'm not the best at explaining stuff.

I really hope someone might know how to fix this, it really bugs me when i can fix things myself.

Ok. I`ll take a stab at it.

The drive with the OS you want to keep is connected to the motherboard directly(?). Also the jumper set as Master.
The drive you want to use as storage is connected to a SCSI controller card(?).

With both drives connected and booting into the drive with the OS you want to keep I am guessing the drivers for the SCSI card have not been installed.
If you go into Device manager in the boot`d OS are there any ? or ! showing?

Im not quite sure what the "Jumper" is.


Crap, i once again forgot to explain something.

I can't boot into any HDD at the moment when there both connected. They work fine separately. But when connected, i get a "failed to boot Operating System"

Not knowing the make of the hard drives in question, HERE is a brief explanation of jumper settings for Seagate & Maxtor.

As mentioned in the description, jumper locations for different functions are usually marked on the labeling of the hard drive. If not then visit the hard drives manufacturers website for details.

Disregard my mention of the missing drivers.

Alright, ive located the so called "jumper" on the HDD.

Do i need to get a cable and hook it up to the other HDD?

Ok, i think i may understand what my problem is.

Im not 100% sure, and for all i know, as i type this, i have no idea what the hell im talking about lol.


I think, after looking at some stuff, i need set one HDD to Master and one to Slave.

I think both are set to Master and thats why it wont boot up.

Only problem is, i have no idea how to do that.

What make are the drives?

Have not dealt with SCSI before but am confident we can figure it out.

Looking at the diagram from the provided link I do not see a master\slave option. Does you controller card have two ports to plug drives into or just the one?

If your refering to makes as in, iede,sata,SCSI,

I have an SCSI Hard drive, or Scuzzy. Whatever you want to call it.


Controller card (or SCSI card(?) only has one port on it so i can't plug the drives in seperately.

I was referring to who made the hard drive. I see you already posted that information in a new thread and received help.

i finally understand these HDD abit more. I found the jumper settings and i see the little palstic things.

At least now i know what i need to change.
