I said other because I have had experience with our family's 2 Toshiba laptops (a 1998 model and a 2002 model) and they have both been pretty much bulletproof. My neighbor (a computer guru) agrees. Both of our units are still functional, each having about 10 hours of "power on" time per day for the time my mom used them (about 6 years for the old and 3 years for the new).
I won't speak down on the other brands as I have had no experience with them, but I know Dell makes good, cheap machines (desktops, and I assume laptops, too).

I like HP and Dell. I think as long as you stay with medium class computers, most will perform as wished.
My two cents...

I go for Hp. I had a compaq before I got this one and both have run very well. My laptop stays on just about 24/7. I restart it every now and then when it gets slow.
Its really sometimes just a preference on what brand to get. You will not find a computer thats perfect. I would read reviews though before buying one.
