Data Backup

i have heard different things regarding backing up data on machines that are infected... I've heard to do a backup first and i have also heard it doesn't make sense to backup infected data. I tend to agree with the latter, however i do not have alot of experience.

Can someone give some insight regarding this?

I'm not a trained malware person, but my opinion is it depends on the severity and type of the infection. Some infections are not as severe and you can save things that are not .exe applications. Some are severe enough that the safest thing to do is wipe and start over and not risk saving anything. Only a trained malware helper who knows what your infection is and the severity should guide you in that decision.
