Resolution changes after sleep mode

I have a 23-inch monitor that I've set to 1920 x 1080 by default. However, when I leave my computer inactive for too long and wake the monitor up, for some reason the resolution is set to 1280 x 720. The longest I've left this PC alone was while I was asleep overnight. I haven't shut off the monitor by hitting the power switch.

Specs for the desktop system connected to the monitor: Quad Core Q8400 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, GeForce GTS 250 1TB VRAM, Windows Vista Home Premium.

Monitor specs: HP 2309p

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I've installed a pivot control software that was included with my monitor.

EDIT: Not always after sleep mode, sometimes this happens after inactivity.

I know that hibernate/standby can act up with a corrupt video driver
I'd start by replacing/updating that
