My computer keeps freezing.

My computer keeps freezing, usually after its been on for about 10-20 minutes.
I don't really know what else you need to analyse the problem, so I'm hoping you guys can ask the questions :huh:

When It's freezing, nothing works. Not Task manager, can't log out or anything.

well. this could be SEVERAL reasons. hardware and software. if you have RECENTLY added new hardware. try disconecting it and then see if computer locks up. if not i would say if you do not have antivirus to download avg free version and do COMPLETE scan. maybe try combofix.
if this is a hardware issue. anything could be the problem.

Nothing has been added recently, hardware of software.

Although, once last week I did get a Blue Screen Error Message. Can't remember the exact words, but it said IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
It's not really got a lot of programs on it (It's my moms computer, she really only uses it for internet and email) and it has been scanned with Avira, with no threats.

How long have you had the PC?

The freezes could be heat related. Is this a tower or lap top?

Tower.

Don't think it could be heat related, it's just a basic PC and hasn't been overworked.. and it's kept in an Outdoor Office/Summerhouse.

Overheating is not always related to overworking.

How long have you had the PC?

Has the side ever been pulled off to check for dust and hair build-up around the fans? In particular, the power supply and processor fan\heat sink fins?

This is a common occurrence on all air cooled PCs.

Hi

Just opened the case, suprisingly, it was really clean. No dust/hair build up.
If it helps, the mouse still moves when the computer has frozen.

Well, that seems to rule out a heat issue.

As I said, it's just a basic PC - Perfect for what my mum uses it for though.

Vista Home Basic and It's a dell (I don't like Dell). I think it's a Dimension E520.

Has Vista been fully updated?

When it freezes is any one certain thing being done on it?

Such as surfing? Checking e mail? Any online games being played?

Trying to find a common occurrence that may point to the problem.

Another thought. You are running Avira. I know store bought PCs do not come pre-loaded with it. Have you uninstalled any previous AV?

Windows fully updated.

Nothing in particular, I don't think. It's not my computer so I'm not entirely sure but I think it is just from general use, and nothing particular. I'll test this myself later.

It's had a previous AV, but that was uninstalled. It's been running Avira for months, and the problems only been there for weeks. So I wouldn't relate it to Avira.
I'll do a online AV scan with Housecall, see what that says.

One other thing.

When was the last time regular PC maintenance was performed?

Temp. file clean up, cookies removed, disk defrag run?
