OK my friend has this problem.

He has a folder containing 2 word documents. The problem is the file appears as an unknown file extension.(you know the white page with the little icons).

I was wondering how we could fix this.

The file if you are wondering is located HERE: http://sixpop.com/files/1002/Karate

Any help is appreciated.

BTW when we open it in word or notepad it appears as heaps of y's.
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy etc.

Thankyou BC

What is the file extension?

Also any info on his system--computer specs, o/s, new/existing software.

Info HERE on octet-stream. That is what it downloads as. Most info points to it being a binary code. Use extreme caution when trying to view\execute it.

actually it's a .file extension name if your friend downloaded it then try downloading it again then before you actually download it change the file name or the extension filename to corresponding extension name for example if iti is document then rename it with .doc extension name. hope you understand and hope it be helpful

No, no he didn't download it.
After he finished saving and everything WORD crashed then the folder turned into the icon:

Any more ideas people?

Thankyou for our replies as well. Although they didn't work, I do appreciate them! :D

If changing the extension to .doc (which is the proper extension for something created in Word prior to Word 07 when it changed to .docx I believe) as Noobuser suggested then not sure what to do.

Since you stated that Word crashed upon completion\save, it could possibly be corrupted and unusable.
