BleepingComputer.com: Installing software and drivers?

I am using a laptop which uses intel 4500mhd for graphics, and not only am I having a hard time finding drivers for it, I think I found one, but I cannot figure out how to install tarball files.

I'm running Mint 7 Gloria and I am completely new to linux. I downloaded firefox 3.5 and was and continue to be baffled by the way software is installed.

The tutorials I've found are vague or assume I know what I'm doing, and I do not have a clue! Can someone help me with one of these problems? Maybe post a link?
