Wish we could have solved it for you.

Actually 2 1/2 years is pretty good life out of an optical drive depending on usage. I know Gamers that just expect to replace theirs about once a year do to the load gaming can put on them..

go to the bios
and select cdrom or dvdrom as first boot(most of the time its ready CDROM>FLOPPYDRIVE>HARDDRIVE but it may be different so you should go and look)

i know that the windows xp disc will say
do you want to boot from this disc...(may be different its been a long time since i booted one of those)

Have you tried the upper/lower filters routine? It takes care of various problems and is worth a try, IMO.

Although this is pretty routine, it does involve a registry edit. That being the case, you need to be mindful of what the registry is and the harm that can be done...and backup your registry before proceeding with any edits. ERUNT is an excellent tool for backing up the registry, ERUNT Registry Backup Tool - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html

I went in and deleted the Upper Filters, but there's no "lower filters" listed; what does that mean?

Still no go with the Upper Filters deleted, though....
