This is probably the most stupid trick ever published on this board, but it can be life changing. Many people struggle with slow computers at work and they just keep struggling and struggling.

This is what you do; write an e-mail to IT helpdesk: "Dear help-desk, my computer has around 1GB memory, but by normal state of affairs, I am using around 1.30GB memory (internet explorer, several word documents, pdf file, excel), which is causing my computer to be super slow. Could you give me 2GB memory, or a newer machine?"

In 2 hours, a guy came with a 2GB RAM, added to my PC, and now I have 3GB. The rest of my colleagues still have1GB, and you can just hear their hard-disk loading on all the excess memory all the time. "RAM and girls are similar. If you do not ask the girl for a date, you will not get a date."

My employer's help desk would probably send two woolly, hooved and horned animals and wonder why I was less than impressed!!

Well done ... !!

If I tried that at my school, I would certainly be asked to provide: what educational value is there in upgrading your RAM; how is this going to impact your teaching abilities and the students' success on the state mandated testing instrument (please provide at least three different models for us to compare and contrast so that the administration may make an informed decision prior to granting your request); please provide complete data on the reason for your request and the cost involved (as well as whether our board-approved vendors have this RAM available); and why do you feel there is a direct correlation between the amount of RAM you have in your computer and your students' performance and success in the classroom? How will this impact them in the future, and how will this impact the district as a whole?

Then, once this is done, submit your request to the Help Desk, and see that you are now request No. 357 on campus for computer work and the estimated time until completion is approximately two months (pending district approval, of course).

Well, so since I upgraded from 1GB RAM to 3GB RAM, my computer is like a Usain Bolt (he holds the world records for the 100 metres and the 200 metres).

Forget, about processor, hard disk, etc... If you just do simple tasks like word, excel, internet, e-mail a simple upgrade of RAM will make your computer outperform the others.

If you have a RAM issue at your office computer, it is even worth to consider to buy an extra 1GB RAM from your own money: fast PC will extends your life for another 10 years.

Maybe... that is if you're still using an original Pentium, in which case high accuracy isn't important.
