BleepingComputer.com: Computer shutdown due to damaged "block" in harddisk

Hey folks!


According to my event viewer my computer shuts down on a regular basis due to a damaged block in my harddisk. (I don't know if "block" is an understandable term for it is translated from dutch)

I think this is a bit inaccurate...bad block errors are more serious, IMO, than bad sectors on a hard drive, they are not the same thing. If one reviews various webpages on this subject...you will find that most, if not all, disagree with my perception.

But, in my 13 years of fiddling around with my PCs...I have never been concerned with bad sectors and neither is Windows (bad sectors on a drive do not show up as a hardware problem waiting to happen, bad sectors are not noted in Event Viewer as something to be concerned about).

Whereas any situation depicted by Event Viewer or Windows as a "bad block" indicates something requiring immediate attention.

Bad sectors are noted during a chkdsk /r and are routinely taken care of by remapping data.

A bad block, OTOH, seems to be something Windows feels that a user should be instantly alerted to.

If I'm wrong, it won't be the first time .
