I've seen them in many websites but what are they?

How do they work?

From the little I've heard they are supposed to give you updates on something. Is that it? If so how do I get those updates? Or is it something else?

thanks =D

RSS is a news feed. It serves up headlines which you can follow
for the whole story. RSS demo here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/rssreader/
To subscribe to feeds you need a reader.
I use Firefox with two RSS add ons. Sage and Newsfox.
Sage loads in the sidebar and is pretty basic. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/77
Newsfox opens in a new tab and is much like an email client. http://newsfox.mozdev.org/

If you have a gmail account Google have a feed reader. http://www.google.com/reader

According to Microsoft, Internet Explorer 7 has a built-in feed reader.
