More background information: My laptop is a hp dv6408nr. Previously I replaced my old hard drive with a newer hard drive. I used Acronis software to make a backup image of my files a while back. I cannot remember if I needed to use a disc to boot the Acronis software or not, but now I believe that my dvd drive is going bad so I may have to get a new one. Also, my recovery discs from hp do not work and I think it is due to my dvd drive. I also tried to use a windows vista recovery disc that I downloaded, but only got as far as this screen before it froze up (I got a black screen after I pressed enter):
The disc kept spinning and the laser kept making a high pitched sound as if it was trying to read the disc.
Do I need to get a new dvd drive in order to use my recovery discs or is there another way of getting out of this mess?
One more quick question.. I used the hp recovery tool, so does this mean that after my hard drive was formatted, all of my files will be lost on each of my partitions or just for the C partition which has vista installed on it? I have 3 partitions: C: (windows) D: (recovery) and F: (where I keep most of my files).
I would hope that I could still be able to get at my F partition after I get my computer recovered. I think that only my C partition was formatted but I am not positive.
