At my house I have a belkin wireless g plus router with to access points connected to the back of the router pointed at two other houses. One access point is set to G and the other is set to B/G. Do they all need to be set to G? Does it matter, someone told me it would "bring down the network". Thanks

It should not matter.
Figuring all your devices are G, all you are doing is allowing older B only devices the ability to connect.

If you are not experiencing any problems then I would not worry. If you are concerned about what you were told then access the router GUI and change the setting to G only to match the other WAP.
