Win2000Pro Using a downloaded msconfig utility(remember this is 2000 Pro), in the startup tab, I have two startup items that just list the letter "N". The path (command) is also just listed as the letter N. The location is HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current.... I can't get the rest of the extension. In Documents and Settings(for some reason I have 7 folders), I have checked every startup subfolder there and no mention of "N". It also does not show up running Regcleaner in the startup list. What the heck is "N"? Your help is appreciated. Randall |

Have you tried disabling it, and rebooting. If you get any errors, id just enable it.
And do you have a reputable antivirus and 3rd party spyware application installed? For an antivirus i reccomend Zonelarm For spyware i reccomend Ad-aware or -------------------- =(*)(*)=Home Of The TEB=(*)(*)=

Sorry I should have added I have done many scans recently due to another situation I will post about later.
I have Computer Associates AV and Firewall, which is almost identical to ZoneAlarm. Maybe the same people. I have scanned with Ad-Aware and M$ Anti-Spyware Beta 1 and run M$ Malicious Software Removal Tool. Negative results on all. I'll try your suggestion, but was worried about not being able to boot.....But I've always got GoBack. I'll post with the results. Thanks, Randall |

No problems so far, but now I have to go through "selective startup" windows every boot. I'll see what happens, but now I have another question. The "HKCU" has disappeared from the location. Now it just starts with "SOFTWARE". It's not in any software folder I can find, nor that is listed in Regcleaner.
I miss my 9X world sometimes. Just a "Tshoot" in front and you don't have to mess with it anymore (or the registry). If HKCU is part of the registry, I can't find it. So I'm gonna need some help later. I still hope someone knows what "N" designates. Thanks, again. Randall |

Hmm ive been looking through google and havent been able to ifentify your startup item.
Usually all sections of the registry where the software folder contains all the registry keys for different software installed on your computer. Windows selective startup is ok, thats not a problem. Also, can you take a screenshot of the file? go to the message, press the print screen button on the upper right area of your keyboard. Open microsoft paint, click edit, then click paste. Your image will appear in the paint box, click file save as navigate to your dekstop and save it as a gif, or jpeg/jpg. Dont save it as a bitmap. go to imageshack.us upload your picture, and paste the direct url to here so i can look at it. Sorry for this post, but I messed up and deleted the image on the site and it didn't show. I posted "hang on" here, but it didn't make sense after the image was restored, so.........ergo the edit.

Thanks, but I wake up confused. I deleted the screenshot on my computer, then at photobucket. Of course it didn't show up here so I restored it, then two images.

I know techs appreciate feedback so......I fixed the problem. I followed the extension as far as it went to Windows. I used HJT and found two registry items
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=N F3 - REG:win.ini: run=N checked to fix and rebooted......Viola!!! I still don't know what they were, but have a question that could help with an answer: I found two entries (Note 1 and Note 2) in my win:ini files. These were in the WinZip string (under Windows). Could the "N" stand for "Note"? One says This section is required only to install the optional Winzip Internet Browser Support build 0231 and the other Removing this section of the win:ini will have no effect except preventing installation of WinZip internet browser support build 0231. They are still there, but whether or not they were associated with the original problem, can I delete these items? I seldom use WinZip, therefore have absolutely no idea what "the optional Winzip Internet Browser Support build 0231" refers to. I just love to clean my cyber house. Opinions/ideas? Thanks, Randall |

QUOTE [WinZip] WinZip 8.0 for Windows 95/98/2000 and NT (Not the latest version) WinZip 9.0 SR-1 is the latest version. http://www.idp.net/freesoft/winzip.asp Note-1=This section is required only to install the optional WinZip Internet Browser Support build 0231. Note-2=Removing this section of the win.ini will have no effect except preventing installation of WinZip Internet Browser Support build 0231. win32_version=6.3-7.0 WinZip Internet Browser Support Add-Ons For Windows 3.1, 95 and NT: WinZip's Internet Browser Support will automate much of the work normally associated with downloading compressed files from the Internet. When you click on a Zip file using Netscape Navigator/Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, WinZip will take over when the download is completed. WinZip automatically moves the downloaded file to your download folder (initially set to c:\download) and then (optionally) opens the file. WinZip's Internet Browser Support feature works with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator/Communicator, and depends on the interfaces these browsers use for "helper" applications. The current version (build 0231) of Internet Browser Support has been tested with the following browsers: 32-bit 16-bit Netscape Communicator (release) 4.04, 4.03, 4.01a 4.04, 4.03, 4.01a Netscape Navigator (release) 3.04, 3.03 3.03 Microsoft Internet Explorer (release) 3.02 3.03.2925, 3.02a Microsoft Internet Explorer (release) 4.0, 4.01 While conducting a search @ winzip.com, for Winzip Internet Browser Support build 0231 I came up empty. http://www.winzip.com/htsearch.cgi?words=W...&Go.x=12&Go.y=6 In your screenshot of startups. The "N" startup location is: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion.... Did you have "Windows NT" before 2000 Pro? Your welcome. I am not one of the tech's here. LOL Research is my strong point.
But I'm still curious, did you have "Windows NT" before 2000 Pro? QUOTE In your screenshot of startups. The "N" startup location is:
