You need to get a disk, that is the only way. If you know someone who has a disk that is for the same version of XP as your license key is for, you can just borrow that disk and then use the license key on your computer to activate. By same version I mean, if the code is for Home version, then the disk must be too.

Sure you can download from torrents, however, you will be coming back here begging for help to remove your viruses, spyware etc.

Why not call the manufacture of the machine and order a set of CDs. The CD cost $15.00 or so.

Downloading copyrighted material (music, software, movies etc) from torrents is considered illegal.

Downloading a torrent copy is a bad idea, either borrowing a disk or ordering them from HP is a much better idea. I don't know how I missed that your computer is an HP, I should have caught that and suggested going through them like Mr. Lunchbox did.

But I have my product key, would that be similar to borrowing a disk from someone?

Part of the problem with torrents...which some don't seem to realize...is that sometimes downloaders get more than they anticipate receiveing.

The unanticipated guests come in the form of malware.

Someone?

Did you try it to see if what that "someone" told you is true?

Did any official representative of Dell...provide this tip?

Do any of the manuals governing your particular system...advise such?

Louis

Someone = a friend of mine who visited tonight. He writes web pages for a living..

I mentioned the "getting the disks from HP and he said I might be able to load it from the recovery disks.

Martel:

Microsoft offers a solution, but only if you have access to a floppy drive.

MS allows users to download legitimate (read here "authentic") XP setup files for installation from a floppy drive. According to the following KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

"You can obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft, but only by download. We provide the Setup boot disks so that you can run the Setup program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM. If you can start your computer from a CD-ROM or from a network-based installation, we strongly recommend that you use those installation methods instead."

The versions available for download:
  • Windows XP Home Edition
  • Windows XP Service Pack 1
  • Windows XP Service Pack 2

Links to download are provided on the same KB. Create the boot disks for your version and use the installation key on your laptop.

Let me know if this works.

There is a disk in my recovery disks for reinstalling XP.

Sorry for the delay

I had an International Japanese exchange visitor.

And I built a pergola.

I am beginning the install now.

Thanks for the help
