Need New Hard Drive Which and Where?

I have a inspiron 1721 and I go the cant find this file so lets not work

windows/system32/config or ntoskrnl.exe whatever

well my main account i used was the Administrators and when I go into the Recovery Console it prompts for a password. Mine doesnt work.

so im forced to buy a new hard drive, I have the OEM vista premium and XP pro discs.

i talked to a dell tech and he said i had a

3.5 inch drive
Serial ATA
150MB transfer at 5400RPM

now i dont know what drive to buy...I was looking at newegg....

can i get a 7200RPM? can anybody make any suggestions? Id like at least 160GB drive.

so why do you need a new drive ? if you can't repair your old windows system ... reinstall windows on the drive you have.

doing enter with no password says its invalid

Buying a hard drive (as long as its new) these days...is purely a matter of preference.

FWIW: Laptops don't have 3.5" drives, desktops do. Laptops have 2.5" drives.

So you need a SATA laptop hard drive, whichever you prefer.

best buy has some good deals but i generally go with newegg

Does it matter if its SATA 1.5Gb or SATA 3.0Gb?

The SATA spec is backwards compatible, but if your motherboard can handle SATA at 3Gb, then you will see increased performance. Just make sure you get a drive for a laptop and not a desktop.

The board will indicate SATA II support on the specs.

yeah ill have to get one off of newegg. anybody have any hard drives to stay away from? i heard the 1tb barracudda (spelling is bad) had failure problems. i would just like a reliable hard drive.

Most hard drives are reliable, though some are more infamous. Case in point: Hitachi Deskstar. No hard drive will last forever, in fact, most only last about five years or so. Solid State Disks (SSD's) will last a while since they have no moving parts. The only problem is they are expensive. Most laptop hard drives run at 5400RPM whereas most mainstream desktop drives spin at 7200RPM. The faster the drive, the faster data can be read. Given the miniaturization needed for the 7200RPM's, they are also expensive, hotter, and can vibrate. The Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT is a good drive for a 5400RPM hard disk.
