Installed Ubuntu 9.04 from disc sent to me by Ubuntu.
All is well except Totem...Am I the only one with problems
using this program? What happens is that it doesn't work
unless I have Rhythm Box playing...I can then turn down
the sound on Rhythm Box and Totem works just fine for
audio and video....however it will not work on its own for
audio or video....It seems to load very fast and then zip,
it's gone...Any clues? I believe I have all the plug-ins.

I can't say i know how to fix it, only recommend a different program. VLC is the media player. It can play all of the following video formats (lots of audo formats too, but you said that Rhythmbox works:

MPEG-1/2, DIVX (1/2/3), MPEG-4 ASP, DivX 4/5/6, XviD, 3ivX D4, H.261, H.263/H.263i, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, Cinepak, OGG-Theora, Dirac/VC-2, MJPEG (A/:thumbsup:, WMV 1/2, WMV 3, Sorenson 1/3 (Quicktime), DV (Digital Video), On2 VP3/VP5/VP6, Indeo Video v3 (IV32), Real Video 1/2, Real Video 3/4

and is available from the Ubuntu repositories.

Amazing Andrew, Thanks, I know about VLC and have tried it.
The part that is so frustrating to me about Totem is that it's
like jump starting a car. When you do that, the car starts and
usually stays running until you turn off the ignition and then
won't start up again without a jump....that's exactly what's
going on with Rhythm Box and Totem...weird!!!

Now this is even stranger....I used the same disc and did a Ubuntu alongside Windows in
my other p/c and it works as it should. The only thing I haven't done yet is do all the updates.
I'll report the good or bad after that...............The install alongside windows is my older p/c with
less ram and everything else..go figure..

Edit: I have now updated my "lesser" computer and yet the audio and video in Totem work
like I would expect it too. I'll have to look more at the problem computer now that this has
become a quest...I don't know if adding this will help anyone but, boy, using the same disc
in different computers and getting an AAA a really old one and a C- on my pride and joy
computer makes me wonder what the heck is going on..In any event, I'm off to sleep.

The last I have to say about Totem. I installed, using the same disc,
in yet another computer and it works like a charm...So 2 out of 3 work
wonderfully and the third ok except for Totem. Not bad 2 out of 3 though.
The one that doesn't work 100% is a Dell and the other two were made
from scratch....maybe Dell doesn't like me......

Is Totem the default player or not? Darn it, this
should work on its own and not rely on Rhythm box.

This is an extreme work-around for anyone else having a problem with Totem.
I open Rhythm box to any Shoutcast station, turn the volume to zero (in Rhymbox/s panel.....Minimize it.
And now I can use VLC or Totem to do whatever it was intended to do....So, something in my computers sound system? Don't know, but that works and this is the last I have to say about it.....This entire topic can be deleted. I just wanted to post this last thing.
