I was just at a talk by Matt Mason (pirate radio DJ and author of The Pirate's Dilemma.)

As part of his talk, he mentioned a professor in the Western US (University of Colorado, I think) calculated the average damages of unintentional law breaking...and it was $12.5 million per day for an average, law-abiding citizen. Think about that for a second..it's amazing.

NOTE: I was going to include a link to the book, but didn't want to be soliciting. I have no affiliation with the author, except that I attended a very interesting and thought-provoking talk at work the other day.

EDIT: clarified it was per day for damages.
