dialup problems

im having trouble connecting to the internet on dial -up on my desktop computer.its a dell something,sorry its a friends computer :thumbsup:

he is using aol .....i know...... his laptop connects fine,but not the desktop.the desktop has a fax modem. i have tried to uninstall aol and reinstall,which caused more probs.but i need help with the connection issue.i have already redone the driver for it.

that didnt work. i have no modem sounds and it wont dial out for some reason. it all works on the laptop,but not my desktop.so i know its not the phone line. ive changed cards and stuff and still nothing?????

I ran into something similar and could not dope it out, what I did was to physically remove the modem delete it from device manager reboot & shut down then reinstalled the modem. What ever was wrong Windows fixed during the re install.

If you test for functionality and it's not clicking, you either need to reinstall or buy a new modem, IMO.

kinda got it figured out, a more professional techie then me said he has a virus or worm and to just throw it away cause it s hard to remove or cant be removed.

Whoa, do not throw it away.

If you suspect a virus then click the link below and post in the Am I Infected section of this forum and let them find out what virus it is and try to clean it. The majority of viruses can be cleaned and if not, then you just reformat and reinstall.

I don't think a modem can get a virus, my be wrong but never ever heard of that!

To the OP: I think you need to stop considering a person who gave you advice such as that...a "techie."

If the modem is bad, replace it.

If the system has a virus...take steps to get help for removing such.

thank you all for your help. im running every security app that i have or can find to remove anything bad on there. i might post a hijack log or summin to the forum.
