need to know how to connect the internet though ethernet port

hey guys
i got a switch and a cable modem and a few cables
i plugged it all up and i have put them in my ubuntu machine
works the first boot up, no questions asked
but when i plug the Ethernet plug into my vista laptop
nothing happens
but now when i put the usb cable for my modem and plug it into my vista laptop nothing also happens now
i used to do it the usb way all the time now its not working at all!!!! (this is my brothers laptop and he will destroy me lol)

so how do i fix it so it will work with the usb
but what i really want is to make it work with the switch

ok fixed the problem
all i need to do now is to make vista go though the switch to get internet
i made my windows me computer do it :huh: all i did was install the network card drivers lol

It really all should be plug and plug. you have the set up:

Router > Switch > PC 1
> PC 2
> etc....

?

no its like this
Cable modem > switch > PC

i tried booting in ubuntu (cd boot)
it booted all fine
but i connected the ethernet cable in and that wont detect also
so i looked in the bios to see if the ethernet card is off
its on
so i dont know whats going on and what to do

ok its turns out its a modem problem
i will have to post this one in the hard ware forums
