Hello,

My friend is having an issue, She has a Dell computer tower which came with Vista but she downgraded to XP, I recently upgraded it back to Vista and it worked fine until a week or so ago and now it wont open folders or programs very often, its crashing a lot and nothing seems to work. Im having to use task manager [if that even loads] to sort it out,

Ive ran a scan with Bitdefender and Superanti spyware and nothing. Im have defragged and etc, nothing seems to be working?

Have you considered using Knoppix Live CD (Linux) to try to rescue the important stuff to external storage media ? Just in case things get worse?

Here's a link to a guide on how to do so. The version of Knoppix may have changed but the same principles apply:

Hope this is of some help?

Personally, I'd back up any important data. Start from scratch.. Format it. I'm not a big fan of upgrades/downgrades. I'll never mess with them. I always do a complete fresh re-install.

Try to boot into safe mode, backup all your data.. Then wipe it and re-install.

Oh and put more memory in the machine while your at it.. 2 GB is pretty low... especially with the price of memory being soo cheap.
