Low virtual memory & bad lagging

Hi!

I know I will have to reformate my laptop asap (multiple infection with all sorts of malwares,2 of them has been root kits,although it looks clean now) ,but I am wondering if something from this could be detected.

Here and there I got message (windows XP )

"Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file." right after start .

Today laptop was running quiet well,when it start lagging badly .

I took a screen shot, but that does not help me at all ! Can someone who understand this take a look and eventually find a reason of periodical bad lagging!

None of the processes look bad, but that does not mean there is something else that is not shown using up resources. When reboot this should clear it up again. How long after a reboot does it take till you get the lack of resources error?

5 minutes,as soon as my desktop is up,antivirus tray is showing up,(i still do not see clock,msn messenger try or anything else,in that stage I can't open anything still (like Start...)

Not quiet positive,but as far as I can remember,that high values has IE and msn messenger only,yesterday.

Something is using up the memory obviously. I would download process explorer from here and see if that can shine any light as to what is using the resources:

We need to enable memory use. Click on the View menu and then select Select Columns. Then click on the Process memory tab and put a checkmark next to the following:

Page Faults
Working Set Size

Then press ok. You may need to adjusts the column sizes till you see the three new ones. This shows which are using the most memory and the amount of page faults that shows how often virtual memory is used for a particular process. Using these numbers you can find what process is killing the machine, unless it is a hidden malware process.

I have to say that 256MB is awfully small these days for a computer. Newer and newer versions of programs just use more and more memory. Have you installed any newer versions of anti-malware programs?

Well,yes,spybot s&d.ad aware se,[ComboFix,MalwareBytes,RootRepeal(+ Z7456)] plus I got unwonted Java which I can't uninstall any more,updated windows into SP 3- but such bad lagging came after multiple infection,(and not all the time after get ride of last Worm ),which suppose to be cleaned up )...

OK, thank you very much I feel bad taking your time!

I will see what I will get after reformatting laptop and eventually adding more RAM .

Sorry I couldnt help more. My guess is if you added more memory your problems would go away. Thankfully memory is relatively cheap these days.

Yes,you did help !!! (Now I know what is NOT issue with it!

And,yes it is,but the question is would I be able to find what I need for this old,poor (beeing in my hands :thumbsup: ) laptop!

Hi again,Grinler and thank you for helping me ! :thumbsup:

I got update on previous posts. Seems I disabled spybot yesterday before I took screen shoots .I got Low virtual memory this morning again,took eternety for laptop to be up & was going nowhere ;shame I didn't took a ss ,but here what I've noticed


''fault'' for TeaTimer has been over 1 000 000 K,later the same for spybot after I disabled TeaTimer . Is that " crazy"?

(After restarting I got 'normal' values for it )

Now,I know there is a thread how to disable spybot and ad aware automatically to start ,but I am a bit lost in this big forum and can't find it now when I need it,would you be so kind and provide me the link ?! (Even when I disable real time scan for those 2 , it happen they start again after while by themselves ).
