How to stop desktop icons refreshing automatically?
It gets on my nerves >(

Greetings .

By refresh, do you mean where it changes how you had the icons arranged on the desktop? If so you can do that by right clicking on the desktop and hovering the mouse over Arrange icons by and uncheck Auto arrange. There's also a way to save and restore your icon arrangement if you change screen resolutions. Instructions on how to do so can be found here.

A few things could be causing that, including shell extensions being loaded and unloaded or even the settings of your video card driver control application.

Tough to determin but Autoruns should help:

Please download Sysinternals Autoruns from here.

• Save Autoruns.exe to your desktop and double-click it to run it.
  
• Once it starts, please press the Esc key on your keyboard.
  
• Now that scanning is stopped, click on the Options button at the top of the program and select Verify Code Signatures
  
• Once that's done press the F5 key on your keyboard, this will start the scan again, this time let it finish.
  
• When it's finished, please click on the File button at the top of the program and select Save and save the Autoruns.arn file to your desktop.
  
• Now right-click on the Autoruns.arn file located on your desktop and highlight Sent To and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  
• Please attach the Autoruns.zip file you just created to your next post.

What do I use to open that file with Exile? LOL I've had autoruns for months now and never used it for that. I figured I'd check it out and see what it said myself, I just can't open it.........

@Shadowdance: I'll have a look at the file and see if I can find any likely suspects that could be causing the problem and get back to you .

I suspect that the program Extension Changer may be the culprate, but I could be wrong but it's certainly worth a shot. Try uninstalling it, reboot and see if it helps.

Aside from that, I also see that you have Regcure by Paretologic installed. While this program isn't exactly a rogue, this company is well known for having a bad requtation regarding their advertising practices and user support along with false positives and other such practices. Keeping or removing it is entirely up to you, and it most likely is not the cause of your issues, I would not have it on my PC and I never recommend any of that particular company's products to anyone (I don't speak for Bleeping Computers of course and their views may certainly differ).

I just use the reg cleaner in Ccleaner myself because it's not too agressive. They're viewed by most (including myself) as being largely unnecessary and potentially dangerous anyway.

Do you have an ATI graphics card by chance? I ask because I saw some ATI drivers listed. If you do then you should download the latest driver for your graphics chip from here. That could correct your issues as well.

As for the slow boot, you can post a boot log, although I might not be qualified to check it as I honestly have little experience in doing so, but perhaps someone else might know. To get a boot log:

• Click the Start Orb and type msconfig and press Enter
  
• Click Continue at the User Account Control prompt
  
• Once you see the System Configuration window open, click on the Boot tab
  
• Check the box next to Boot log
  
• Click the Apply button and click OK
  
• It will ask to reboot, you can do so now or later
  
• Once you've rebooted go to the folder C:\Windows and find a file called ntbtlog.txt
  
• Double click the file to open it with notepad and copy/paste its contents into your response for someone to analyze

At the very least it will tell me exactly which drivers are loading and in what order.

Also, do you still have any Norton/Symantec products installed? I ask because I saw LiveUpdate listed under the Services in your Autoruns file. If you don't then you can remove it:

Open Autoruns and under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services find the following entry:

• LiveUpdate

Right click on it and select Delete but only do so if you have no Norton or Symantec products installed.

You can also uninstall LiveUpdate from Programs and Features in the Control Panel if it's listed but you have no other Norton/Symantec products installed.

Yes I have Norton Systemworks, I don't know why, Its a tradition from my first PC I assume lol (I use it sometimes to get rid of the trash)

I'd like to take a look at one of your event logs please as it will help to understand why you're having slow bootup issues:

• Click the Start Orb and type event viewer and press Enter
  
• Click Continue at the User Account Control prompt
  
• Once the Event Viewer opens click the small arrow on the left pane next to Applications and Services
  
• Then click the arrow next to Microsoft and next, click the arrow next to Windows then click the arrow next to Diagnostics-Performance
  
• Once there, right-click on Operational and select Save Events As... and save it to your desktop as Diagnostic
  
• You can now close Event Viewer
  
• Right-click the Diagnostic file you just saved and highlight Send To and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  
• Attach the Diagnostic.zip file you just created to your next post

As for the bootlog I had you post, as I said, I haven't dealt with them much but I know others have so if I'm unable to help you out, someone familiar with reviewing them may find it useful.

With one quick glance I saw critical on boot time and a critical on ntoskrnl.exe :|
