Nero record video conversion

When using Nero Record I seem to be using 100 % of my processor which slowes the application when recording HiDef movies to my hard drive. I there a way I can boot XP which would limit all unnessary programs and processes from opining so all my resorces would be available to Nero? When I was a Mac user I could assign a special start up to accomplish this.
