Increasing Torrent Download Speed

Anyone able to give me any ideas for increasing the download speed I am able to achieve while downloading files with apps such as Vuze (Azureus), uTorrent, or Bit Torrent?

When downloading files such as app installation files from sites such as Major Geeks or CNET my PC downloads at an average of 180-200 kB/s. When downloading a file through a bit torrent app the speed is very slow....like 2.0-3.0 kB/s.

Any and all responses are appreciated!!

Download speed in bit torrent is dependent on the number of seeds in the swarm. If you're downloading torrents that have a poor seed to leech ratio, or torrents that have few peers at all, then the speed will be slow and there's nothing you can do about it.

Tips:
If you're behind a router, then make sure that you're forwarding your ports properly.

Add more trackers. Google the info hash for the torrent file to find other trackers. Most clients have the ability to add trackers to a torrent.

Make sure that your ISP isn't blocking/messing with bit torrent traffic. If it is, you can try encrypting your torrent traffic to avoid it.

As A.A. says your Listening port is probably closed.
Unless that is open,you will have snail pace downloads.
Find what Port your downloader is using and run a quick check with this nifty program,to verify it's open.
My guess also you are behind a router,and that will have to be configured.
For example,say there are 500 seeders,with my listening Port closed I still get only about 15 KB/S,and with it open,
the best I get is 600+ KB/S.
Make sure your Firewall isn't blocking also.

Thanks for the help and quick replies! I believe I have the right ports forwarded (I am behind a router) but I will look into it and also if my ISP is blocking/messing w/ the bit torrent traffic and I will also check out finding more trackers.

You are right.Some ISP's block torrent download speeds.Forgot to mention that. :thumbsup:

Seeders - torrent providers
Leechers - torrent downloaders
The best case scenario - lot of S, small number of L
The worst case scenario - very few S, lot of L

If you're with XP, applying a patch for half-open connection will help a lot.
MS dropped that limit in Vista and 7.

After a lot of experimenting, here are uTorrent settings, which works the best for me:

FWIW. It is my understanding that if your ISP is going to monitor your usage, this will be in the lower port ranges. I set mine to something like 58886/7 as suggested in other places.
