vostro 1700 xp battery possible fried battery

moved into a older house my vostro was plugged in and beeped 3 times about unkown power voltage,and now it shuts right down and wont work off the battery????

i press the start button and the little batt light shines red for a sec ..like its dead........i press the battery icon on the battery itself and the 4 green lights shine???

what can i do to see wtf happened to my battery
