O/S 98SE. I did a wipe on my hard drive and unless I'm mistaken, I saw something saying that everything on the C drive will be deleted and I went ahead. My intention was to re-install windows 98SE and I was doing that unitl I got the following message: Your computer may have a disk compression program installed on it. Because this system may contain an existing operating system or data, setup cannot continue. What gives?

Just simply use FDISK & FORMAT to wipe and recreate the hard drive partition
That will wipe, recreate and format the hard drive.
Instructions will be necessary

CAUTION!
YOU WILL WIPE THE DRIVE CLEAN!
ALL DATA WILL BE LOST!!

Make sure that you have an original 98SE cd, they installation key code and all necessary drivers ready!

Post more info on system specs please!

CAUTION #2
DO NOT do this unless you are absolutely certain that you can reload it back the way it was!
That includes all drivers: motherboard chipet if necessary, video, sound, network, and modem if applicable.
In the beginning there was the command line.

What's really your problem? I do not understand. You want to format and install Windows 98 SE and you cannot because of this error? It stops the procedure of installing? The "compression disk" reminds me of drvspace.exe program that if you have use it after format, may cause that problem. Your HDD that you're going to install Windows do not have windows right now and it's completely empty? If it is then you should have a boot disk and from this one you can format again and be assure with check disk (chkdsk) program that it was formated and it's empty and ready! Then proceed with install.
