How does windows optimize my xp

When my system is idle, the hard drive light flickers constantly, seemingly nonstop.
I have already optimized my system Jk defrag, Ensuing Reg Cleaner.
I suspect windows is doing something I don't want.
If so I'd like to stop it.

Have a look in Task Manager...when the activity increases.

Bear in mind that the running of some Windows processes (chkdsk, defrag) may not be reflected in Task Manager.
