BleepingComputer.com: memory help required

Hi Everyone, Ihave two computers (1.) A Dell dimension 3000 and a home built using a Asus A8N-VM-CSM Motherboard and a AMD Athlon 64 processor. Thought i would upgrade the Dell memory and bought online a Elpida 512mb DDR400 PC3200 184 pin low density module and on fitting it i found that theDell logo came up and nothing else happened, so i thought i would try it in my Asus built,only to find that it wouldn't perform in that also!! I am now wondering if it could be something to do with the ECC Buffering ? Would appreciate some expert help.

If the memory is ECC it probably isn't going to work in either.
If you can return it, or exchange it, & get low density unbuffered NON ECC memory & it should work.

ECC memory is usually used in servers but there is the occassional home use motherboard that will take either ECC or NON ECC .

Thank you fairjoeblue. This memory is supposed to be unbuffered,so would you say it is not working properly ?

According to Crucial your computer takes DDR-400 (pc3200) and it can support up to 2048 (AKA 2gigs). If you have purchased the correct amount and type of memory I would say the memory chip you bought is defective or was damaged from static electricity during installation.

Have sent memory back for replacement. I did make sure that i grounded myself before touching and it was encased in anti-static bag. It was supposed to be low density unbuffered so i guess we will have to wait and see what transpires ?
