I am recently unemployed and homeless. My Webroot AS and Trend Micro AV subscriptions are about to expire and I don't have the money to renew. Would like to hear from ya'll about your opinions on the best free AS/AV programs. I read on another thread that Grisoft is good, does everyone agree on this? Also, I have heard that uninstalling old programs can be a trick. Any info on this? Thanks

AVG Free is a good anti-virus, the only down-side is that the free version only updates once a day where as AVG's paid versions update upto hourly intervals.

Spybot - Search & Destroy = Free http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Ad-Aware = Free http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Yes, anti-virus programs can be a pain to fully un-install, however some anti-virus companies provide removal tools to fully remove their programs.

Revo Uninstaller will uninstall anything completely.

Malware Bytes is the best free malware checker right now. Ad Aware and Spybot aren't recommended much anymore.

Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware are excellent free programs and many people like the free Avira Antivirus program and the free Comodo Firewall.

I still use Spybot to immunize my system as well as SywareBlaster

I suggest you get AntiVir free, it has very high detection rates (higher than AVG) and is light on resources.

You can also prevent a lot of malware simply by using Firefox with the WOT and Adblock Plus addons.

As others have mentioned you should use Malwarebytes Antimalware free and Superantispyware free as on-demand scanners.
