One last thing to try. http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#WU.2FWUAU

Hopefully, this will take care of it for you.

Now something's really wrong! I can download the file, but it tells me that I can not open it becuase the file is invalid. i tried the second link and can download and open the file, but it tells me that it is not yet configured for Windows Vista . . .

I think I've now managed to pick up something else that is a bit nasty - I can now no longer connect to download emails, but I can still manually connect to the internet (I'm getting to this page fine!!)

Run a Scan of your computer. Just to be safe.

Go into the Device manager on your computer.

Look at the network controllers. Do any of them have a yellow exclamation point next to them?

Ok. Completed the scan (took ages!!!) and that found no issues.

Checked the network controllers - none of them have exclamation points next to them.

I have also downloaded malware-bytes and scanned. It found a few nasties that I have now cleaned off (can get emails again!), but I can't get that to download any updates either (same problem as Windwos and Avira I guess?)

Have tried to get the Windows Updater to work again and still no joy . . . .

Ok... That was my next suggestion was to run malwarebytes. Now that you have I would suggest going here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic182397.html and asking the people that are more able to help with any of these infections.

I think we have exhausted all our options without now running spyware/adware scans and getting help from the properly trained individuals.

Sorry I wasn't more help.
